There’s always plenty of transfer gossip throughout the year with numerous players linked to clubs. So how much of this gossip is realistic and how much of it would be sensible for the clubs and players involved in it? These transfer gossip analysis articles take a look at the major gossip to try and answer the big questions.
What’s the story? Monaco central defender Aymen Abdennour has been heavily linked to Spurs in the French press with a £21.5m transfer fee being suggested. Abdennour joined Monaco in January 2014 to join a team that still boasted Falcao and James Rodriguez and was backed by big money. Since then though, Monaco have had to sell players, and even loan out Falcao in an attempt to cut costs. Abdennour has been the outstanding defender in a Monaco unit that has conceded just 20 league goals and only conceded once in the Champions League group phase. He is a tough tackling, determined defender and the key organiser in the Monaco back four. Spurs have tried a few options at centre back this season but have still looked flimsy.
Does it make sense? It does, although Spurs are sure to face some stiff competition given how thin the central defender market is. Abdennour is really exactly the type of defender Spurs need; a tough, intelligent organiser to compliment the cerebral but not imposing Jan Vertonghen. Spurs will feel that the pull of the Premier league will be strong if Monaco don’t get back in to the Champions League, which is an increasing possibility.
Is the price right? This would be a lot of money. However, Abdennour is only 25 years old and there are sure to be lots of teams bidding on him. Reminds me of the stage of his career that Bayern Munich’s Mehdi Benatia was at before they spent similar money on him. Having gotten their fingers burned by the fees spent on Erik Lamela, Roberto Soldado and Paulinho though, are Spurs looking to jump straight back in to this end of the transfer market?
Will it happen? 4/10 – It would be an excellent signing, and something that Spurs would really benefit from. It’s probable that Monaco will be willing to sell, it’s possible that Abdennour is interested in coming to Spurs. However, unless Spurs can shift what they’ve already spent a lot of money on in recent seasons, will they be willing to commit £20m+ on a single player again?
